Methods of travel: Plane, Train or Automobile?.....or Camel!

Am spending two weeks in Rajasthan in late August before heading for a final week on the Tamil Nadu Coast.

After much research I have now managed to select the places I wish to visit in Rajasthan but my dilema now is which parts to do by car before using trains, and should I use planes for any leg of my itenery? As we are ending up in the south east was wondering whether to incorperate any flights into the schedule to save some time and ease the strain of travelling.

Any advice would be great,

My continually changing schedule is as follows!

Delhi (1 Night

on to Agra by Car

Jaipur (3 Nights) Car

Pushkar (3 Nights)Car

then Train for the rest?

Jodphur (2 Nights)

Jaisalmer (2 Nights)

Udaipur (2 Nights)

Then back to Delhi to fly to Chennai????

Many thanks for any help

Since you have a leisurely trip youll end paying too much for the car for which you need to pay for min 250 km run every day. Best you use trains as follows -

Delhi - Udaipur overnight train

Udaipur-Jodhpur drive

Jodhpur-Jaisalmer overnight train

Jaisalmer - Jaipur overnight train

Jaipur - Ajmer- Shatabdi Express and then taxi to Pushkar

Ajmer - Agra - Train

Agra - Delhi - Train or drive

If you can afford flights, fly to Udaipur. In fact, as a general rule, if I could afford flights, I would do all the shorter trips by train, and substitute with flights for overnight train journeys. I am not a big fan of the toilets or the food on Indian Railways...but some people swear by it.

thank you for your advice, I have tried to find flights to or from Jaisalmer as it is quite out of the way.......is it still a must see in August? I am told that flights do exist.

thanks

No flights to Jaisalmer any more

delhi Udaipur Take Jet air flight and do stay 2night and drive by taxi to Kumbhalgarh fort and Ranakpur temple, milky marbel jain temple, (you can give one night to Ranakpur stay), drive Jodhpur 2nights is good to visit Mehrangarh fort, Umaid bhawan palace, do not miss to take a walk through old blue city(Brahampuri) of Jodhpur and market.try Safron lassi(special drink of Jodhpur made of curd n Saffron).

Drive to jaisalmer via Osian(1000 years old sand stone carved Jain and Hindu temples) is good to explore less touristy desert part of Rajasthan and small small desert hamlets and wild life(chinkara-gazella).village stay or camping is available in this area(see guide book) jaisalmer is good for 2nights, fort it self is small city, and city out side offers great carved havelis(mainsion), there is also a lake, (if mansoon is good), lake side is good to visit in late afternoon. camel safari is most popular activity around jaisalmer, but a bit touristy too.

jaisalmer to Jodhpur overnight train class 3AC is good and comfortable, jodhpur to Ajmer(Pushkar) 220km can be done by road, in 4hour. Ajmer to Jaipur 135km can do also by road,jaipur(2nights is good) to Agra 235km do tarin, and Agra to Delhi 200km. can also be done by train.

OR

do follow these travelers footprints.

I%26#39;m a little confused, npjai - you state that it is no longer possible to fly to Jaisalmer but I%26#39;ve been doing some research on the Kingfisher Airlines website and they come up with flight times and prices for flights in and out of Jaisalmer.

As of now the flight is not operating. Also remember that just because an airline has issued a ticket for a sector, there is no guarantee the flight will actually operate. They can always inform you the flight is not operating and refund you the money, leaving you pulling your hair out.
