The Karanataka Tourism office offers a luxury train through the state called Golden Chariot.

A lot of people on this forum have been asking me for my opinion about this train. I think it is a great itinerary an showcases some really diverse things.

I thought I%26#39;d also list Anita Bora%26#39;s first-hand review and photos of the Golden Chariot, for those of you who are interested.

Reviews of the Golden Chariot Luxury Train

I experienced the Palace On Wheels in Feb 08, and would like anyone who experienced both the Palace and Golden Chariot, the differences and comparisons.

would like to know if the Golden Chariot has better accomadations then the Place on Wheels

Just returned from the Golden Chariot trip. The tour was amazing and well worth while. The train was a great disappointment it was not clean the bed linen was stained as were all the table linen items, food was very bad even the porridge oats! The train is NOT NEW the window in cabin was steamed up (ie. double glazing gone). Only 17 passengers on our trip 4 of whom were free. Our departure was scheduled for the 9th February and was cancelled on the 12th January then reinstated on 14th January that sums up the Golden Chariot

Looks like your experience was totally different to the one we had. I will post a review of our trip which commenced on Jan 19th. In my experience though the train was clean and food was better then some 5 star restaurants..

I travelled on the Golden Chariot beginning of February 2009 and it was the best trip I ever had! The train was absolutely clean (not a single stain on any linnen ...), the food was absolutely delicious (especially the deserts!)and the crew on the train was simply wonderful. We were 34 guests on the train (60 guests are the maximum possible). May-be due to fear of bombs (Mumbai...) and the economic crisis it was not sold out - for sure not because of a lack of quality on the train. The trip, the excursions and everything was perfectly organized. The only thing: you should refuse cabin D on the coaches, because the ac is very loud in there (I only mentioned the problem and the crew immediatly organized another cabin for me). Dont´t miss an ayurvedic massage on the train - it was outstanding. The only critical point may-be the prizes of beer and other alcoholic drinks. They are really expensive (e.g. 300 Rupie for a beer). But, in any case: it was heaven !! Don´t miss it, if you can afford it.

I am amazed you had such a clean train as I cannot believe it got so bad in 2 weeks. I had been in India for 3 weeks prior to the train journey and can assure you it was not up to standard.

Neither was the food.

I was a fully paying guest and as a private person on the train. It was my first travel to India. Besides the Golden Chariot I stayed at the Leela Palace Hotel in Bangalore, the Taj Exotica in Goa and the Taj Hotel in Mumbai. As you might see by this, I´m used to stay in good hotels.Even from that point of view it was a perfect travel on the train.
