I was there in December and stayed at the Abad Atrium in Ernakaulum...not sure if thats too far along MG road for you.

If you are looking at a price range between Rs 1000and 2000, there are couple of hotels which can give you a double room at that range. You can try Hotel geeth(statue), Arya Nivas(near thampanoor railway and bus station) In thampanoor area there are numerous lodges where in you can find decent a/c rooms in budget category. A stroll through the are will work.
