Shopping - Help!

Hi All,

I will be staying in Mumbai (Grand Hyatt area) and was wondering which places are there for shopping in.

I would like to buy dress jewellery and modern fashion clothes?

Also am I far from the shopping hub?

Shopping - Help!

Santacruz West which is quite close to the Grand Hyatt, but on the western side of the railway tracks, is one of the best shopping areas with a huge array of garment and fashion jewellery stores. Most of these are situated between Santacruz Station [West] and SV Rd. You cannot miss them if you tried to! Merchandise is on offer at all price ranges.

Right now, the connecting road is under repair, hence temporarily closed to vehicular traffic going towards SV Rd from the Station. It is therefore a good time to go shopping, with fewer crowds and no traffic.

Many Thanks for your help.

You must go to Linking Road in Bandra (W) too.

Grand Hyatt is loacted near the Western Express highway and there%26#39;s nothing close-by but you can easily come to the west (take a cab or if you%26#39;re for it, an autorickshaw). It%26#39;ll take you around 20 minutes to go to Santacruz (west) another 10 minutes more to Linking Road (mind you, I%26#39;m talking about the afternoon time). Late evenings, you%26#39;ll get more traffic.

You can also venture towards South Mumbai. It%26#39;ll take you about 1-1/2 hrs.

Suesue,

I am going to ask even more questions :)

What kind of jewellery - gold? silver? semi-precious? precious stones? costume jewellery?

Dress - Western / Indian? Western : If Western, my personal opinion would be : buy it from Sydney. If Indian, what kind of Indian and what kind of occasion?

What do you mean by modern fashion clothes?

Could give more directions based on replies.

Looks like you are embarking on quite a shopping jamboree :) Can totally identify with a woman like that :)

Go for it - it will definitely contribute its bit to the Indian economy :)

I would like the coloured bangles (dress)

type not real gold or silver just dress jewllerey.

Plenty of fashion jewellery stores at Santacruz West - the type that Hindi TV soap actors wear. SIA, Silver Age, are some of the stores that sell this kind of jewellery.

There are so many of them, I do not remember all the names, but you can not miss them if you take a stroll in the shopping area near the station.

If you fancy lots of bangles and wish to see a market with lots of stalls, I recommend you get in touch with Deepa Krishnan who is on temporary leave from this forum. She will probably recommend Bhuleswar.

If you do not fancy a market, there is Sia Jewellery. They have several stores all across Mumbai. I usually visit their store on August Kranti Marg / Gowalia Tank Road really close Kemps Corner. It is on the left hand side as you proceed from Kemps Corner towards Nana Chowk / Grant Road. It is among the first few shops at the top of the road.

I recommend you find the store closest to you or visit this one if travelling to Bhulabhai Desai Road and Napeansea Road.

They have an excellent selection of costume jewellery and I recommend the shop highly. There are other costume jewellery places too, but they go into the designer bracket and for that kind of money, I am sure you will get good stuff in Sydney.

Since costume bangles are not high value, the benefit of shopping where the margins are lower is not highly significant and you are bound to be very pleased with the selection at Sia.

I am sure there are shops on Linking Road and even Hill Road in Bandra which are close enough to Grand Hyatt. You could try there too. I am not a regular to Bandra, so am afraid cannot give you better directions.

Looks like I was typing while Snonymous was posting :)

Just to add that if you are travelling to the Chandralok Shopping Arcade on Napeansea Road for sarees, to the left of the building and to the left of Vandana is a gateway which leads to several small stores. There are jewellery stores there too.

RoFrank, you are a veritable wealth of information - on your other posts as well. Have you compiled all of it in a blog?

About Bhuleshwar, times have changed. Today there are several hubs in the suburbs which are much better than visiting the narrow, sometimes filthy, and always crowded lanes of Bhuleshwar. Santacruz, Vile Parle, Kandivli, Borivili, Andheri, Lokhandwala, Mulund, Ghatkopar, Chembur etc all stock the bits and bobs previously associated exclusively with Bhuleshwar, such as sequins, crystals, laces and other embellishments for garments, haberdashery items et al. Likewise with costume jewellery especially of the type popularised by TV soap actresses; and 1 gram gold jewellery. Ditto for accessories, Indian garments, Indian trousseau shopping and so on.

In general, any predominantly Gujarati inhabited area is usually a shoppers paradise - for women. Most men would probably go mad!
