I booked my tickets online at irctc.co.in, printed the vouchers and all went well. It is a bit complicated but works out much cheaper than using a travel agent. If you would rather use a travel agent - this guy was really helpful:

Tip: take insect spray incase you get attacked by bedbugs on the train like I did - I had to spray my whole backpack, clothes, sleeping bag to get rid of them. (that was in three tier AC) Don%26#39;t book anything lower than that.
