Five cases of Malaria reported

Hi

Five cases of malaria have been reported in the Thiravananthapuram district according to the Hindu newspaper which reports that a coastal village Valiathura ( which is close to the airport and on the route to Kovalam ) has always been vulnerable to the disease.

The authorities state that there has not been a sudden increase in the area and a specific campaign to tackle malaria would be initiated soon.

Ian

Five cases of Malaria reported

Hi Ian

I am travelling out to Kerala this week and I am a little concerned about the reports relating to malaria. We are planning to travel to Kochi and do some backwater trips and did not realise malaria precautions would be needed. Would you advise us to take medication or is it pretty safe in the areas we are planning to travel?

Thanks

Joanne

Hi Joanne

There is no threat of Malaria and there has only been 5 cases out of the Kerala population of 31,841,374 people (population is according to the 2001 census). 3 million people die of malaria every year and 85% of these occur in Africa. Many poeple visit Africa and do not get the disease.

Use coils/plug-ins, repellent, and cover up in the early evening and you should be OK. Use sun cream with repellent during the day.

There has been no further newspaper reports, unlike with the outbreak of Dengue Fever which has now passed, so rest assured that the Malaria (and Dengue Fever) has been dealt with.

If you are still worried then take a look at this site:-
