What do in a 3 week stay

My wife and I , hopefully, will be in Udaipur for about 3 to 4 weeks next Jan/Feb 2010. Long time off , I know but best to start getting things sorted early and then book cheapish flights(hopefully).

I was wondering if anyone with a good knowledge of Udaipur and the surrounds could recommend what we could think about doing during a longish stay.

I was thinking of art classes(complete novice) and maybe a cookery course for me and my wife. We like walking and exploring markets and could take the odd bus/taxi out somewhere for a day.

Hopefully some of you will have some good ideas and suggestions.

Just one other thing. I know it is difficult to forecast the weather but , generally, what will it be like from say last week of January to third week in feb. I have heard it can get extremely cold at nights.

Thanks for any replies.

regards, Pete

What do in a 3 week stay

Weather will be very pleasant, evenings will be cold but not overly so. Apart from exploring the city itself and it%26#39;s usual tourist spots, there are many things you can do around Udaipur. On one weekend, you could drive via Ranakpur to Jodhpur, and come back to Udaipur. Similarly another weekend could be devoted to Jaipur. The fortress of Kumbhalgarh is 80kms north of Udaipur and has a woodland sanctuary. Kankroli / Rajsamand Lake is 65kms.

a part from city visit and stay there are some nearby intresting hilly countryside and you can do simply walk or take special Rajasthani horses ';Marwari'; for a day or few. if you are a horse lover there is a chance to visit horse stable and get to know all about this native horse breed.

you can visit Ranakpur milky marbel Jain temple and fort Kumbhalgarh.

Jain temple at Ranakpur opens from 12noon onwards for non Jainis(over seas travelers).

3/4 weeks is a really long time. Assume youll be working and will only have evening and weekends free.

Old City - Youll be done walking the old city in a few evenings. Walk from Hati Pol to the Jagdish Temple and down to Chand Pol or the other side to the Gulab Bagh. The new ropeway at Dudh Talai is another good place to while an evening. Boat ride on the lake is of course a must (if the water holds out)

City - Saheliyon ki Bari, Sajjangarh, Shilp Gram (and dinner at Shilpi), Badi ke Talab are close by

Excursions - Kumbhalgarh, Ranakpur, Sardargarh, Deogarh, Narlai, Shahpura bagh, Chittor %26amp; Bijaipur, Abu. The list is endless

Eating out - If youre eating out Ambrai, Savage Garden, The Tiger, Jagat Niwas et al will serve well and many more smaller places around the lake. Saw a nice coffee shop during my last visit on the way from Jagdish Temple to Shiv Niwas Palace entrance saying fresh ground coffee. Natraj at Suraj Pol is another option.

No, we won%26#39;t be working! Both long retired-- just want to chill out in a nice place with decent weather and then generally immerse ourselves in the place etc.

Possibly taking a cookery course and art course etc. We do like early morning walks and markets etc.

Not sure where to stay as there seems many good decent relativle inexpensive places. Not sure which one to choose though.

A small appartment for rent could be an option if one is avalable.

Thanks for all you info and if you have any more suggestions etc then please fire away.

Pete

hello, Pete

Jan.,Feb. is tourism peek seasion in Rajasthan and Udaipur is popular travel destination of the state.

but there are plenty of small/budget palaces in city.

places to stay in udaipur city centre(around lake)is in two areas bothside of lake, one is Jagdish temple area and other is Hanuman ghat area. if one wants to stay quiter and less busstle Hanuman ghat area is better. but as you are staying log time so good to tast both and fell about it.

Cheers

Arya Niwas in Jaipur does weekly %26amp; long term rentals at their sister property Tara Niwas. Its used by a lot of corporates who have long staying staff - check www.aryaniwas.com

In Udaipur, try negotiating with Mandiram Palace which is a homestay opposite the Lake Pichola Hotel and quite well located - mandiram.palace@gmail.com. Ive stayed there and its a nice place

Npai,

I looked at the website of the Mandiram. For tarrif they quoted two prices for each room ie a EP and CP rate-- any idea what that refers to?

Also did you mange to see or could comment on what the %26#39;standard rooms%26#39; are like etc.

regards, Pete

Ep is room only %26amp; CP is room %26amp; breakfast

You need an MAP rate including one meal. This can be either lunch or dinner and you can decide day by day which meal you will have that day.

Also ask fo the rate to be inclusive of applicable taxes (MAPAI)

If youre staying long term you should pay for the standard room and get upgraded to the best room for no extra charge. Ask for this

good advice. I will certainly do that now.

Thanks a lot indeed.

regards, Pete
