Restaurants - from Fort to Colaba and not too far from there

This is really more of a part reply to Thestonk%26#39;s post about Hotel Residency and the Fort area, but I thought I would post it separately so that others may add.

These are my recommendations based on having eaten in these places. I must confess that I have not eaten in EVERY restaurant in South Mumbai - as yet, so may have left some out.

They are not listed in order of ranking. I may add some later.

DELUXE : Just around the corner from The Residency, near Citibank on Pitha Street, off P Mehta Road - Malayalee (Kerala) Cuisine - Cheap but wholesome and tasty food. Strong flavours but easily digestible. Try the thali. Avoid the Malayalee Chinese option. Please ask for bottled water and drink straight from the bottle. Recommend for lunch.

MOCAMBO : Close to The Residency. Reasonably priced. Indian Continental. Recommend for lunch.

THE STADIUM CAFE : Veer Nariman Road,by Churchgate Station - Cheap. Bombay type quick food. Recommend for breakfast and lunch.

THE TEA CENTRE : (If open after renovation, not sure) - Veer Nariman Road - Most reasonable. Good for quick lunch

ROYAL CHINA : Fort Area - Same formula as in London. Chinese Cuisine. Sublime food. Tends to be a bit noisy. Expensive but worth every rupee for the food. Recommended for lunch because of Dim Sums.

COPPER CHIMNEY : Kala Ghoda area - Indian Punjabi type cuisine - Not unaffordable - Have lighter stuff if having lunch. I would recommend for dinner.

CHETANA : Kala Ghoda area - Rajasthani, Gujarati, Maharashtrian vegetarian food. Sublime. Reasonably priced. Recommend ofr lunch but recommend a good rest after that. Will not be able to do anything energetic after lunch there.

JOSS : Kala Ghoda area. East Asian cuisine. On the expensive side. Some sublime stuff, some average stuff.

NOT JUST JAZZ BY THE BAY : Veer Nariman Road. Continental-ish. Reasonable. Superb lunch buffet of soup, salads, sandwich, dessert. Recommend really for lunch.

JAPENGO : CR2 Mall, Nariman Point. Japanese, Lebanese, Italian cuisin. Tending towards expensive.

Have the Lebanese. Not quite what it was when first set up, but still good.

CAFE BRITANNIA : Apollo Bunder. Parsi / Irani food. Sublime, sublime, sublime. Reasonable. They do not do dinner and are closed on Sundays.

KAILASH PARBAT HINDU HOTEL : Colaba. Indian street snacks type of veg food. Chaats, etc. Very, very good. Try the kulfi. Reasonable to cheap. Good for a late tea or snacky lunch.

LING%26#39;S PAVILION : Off Colaba Causeway. Chinese. Lovely, different flavours. Between reasonable and expensive but great value for money. Recommend for dinner.

MASALA KRAFT : The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Indian cuisine. Sublime. Very expensive. Recommend for dinner.

THE SOUK : The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Lebanese cuisine. Sublime. Very expensive. Recommend for dinner.

INDIGO DELI : Colaba. Continental. Good for lunch. Expensive.

MOSHE%26#39;S : Cuffe Parade. Italian, Continental. Very, very good. Expensive. Good for breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Let me add OH CALCUTTA in Tardeo and GOVINDA, for both of which you will have to take a 15-20 min taxi ride, but which I include here because they are soooo great.

OH CALCUTTA : Tardeo. Bengali food. Sublime. Expensive.

GOVINDA : Near Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, behind Wilson College, Chowpatty. Vegetarian food. Sublime. Most reasonable.

Now, I will stop to have my lunch at home where I get excellent food :)

RoF, instead of doing it like this, why don%26#39;t you make a Go-List or an Inside Page?

Mumbai_Resident has created a very good dining overview page for Mumbai:

The Tea Center is now open for all that it was famous for before it closed for renovations.

For some lovely Kerala cuisine besides Deluxe you may also try Fountain Plaza and Rehmaniya Restaurants in the lane just next to the Mazda Photo Studio.

Ideal Cafe next to the Residency Hotel is one place where you will get different special dishes (Parsi cuisine) but it is closed on Sundays and is open only for breakfast and lunch till evening. No dinner available here.

Cafe Brittania is finally closing down soon so go there for your last Berry Pulao before they close down.

For some of the best Bengali food go to Howrah (next to Zaffran) at Hotel New Bengal just next to Crawford Market.

New Martin%26#39;s at Colaba and City Kitchen at Ballard Estate for some lovely Goan food.

Piccadily Cafe at Colaba for some great Iranian food.

Cafe Mondegar for one of the best English breakfasts in town along with the Tea Center at Resham Bhavan, Churchgate.

Hope this adds value to the list.

Cheers,

Aadil.

If you haven%26#39;t been to Soul Fry Casa on the same road as Fab India Kala Ghoda (opp Bombay University), you should try it. It%26#39;s clean and the decor is quaint and pleasant and they have Goan food. The seafood starters are good. I find their food is suitable for Western tummies.

We will be staying at the Residency in April and we will be looking for good restaurants to try. Thanks for the info. I%26#39;ll print this off and take it with me for reference.

Aadil,

That bit about Cafe Britannia is going to send my family into permanent depression.

Deepa, I will try your suggestion. New here, not so savvy with the forum.

I was there a week ago and we asked the owners, a father son duo when they were closing and they said not too soon so it seems like you still have some time before they finally close down. It seems they have thought about closing down before too but it still has not happened and we wish it does not happen too.

Cheers,

Aadil.
