if you use the indiamike web be very careful not to ask the little man who reads all the posts if he is a man or machine.(neither i suspect) he will get all upset and ban you for life.
indiamike.com
not that it matters it%26#39;s a rubbish web site anyway trip advisor is much better laid out
indiamike.com
I think indiamike is good for budget / backpacker type of travellers.
i expect it is however my point is that i found their system a little confusing and recieved a warning about multi posting, fair enough. i then posted a question (in a humorous frame of mind) as to whether the messages were being read by man or machine. for this for this i was banned for life by an obviously overwrought individual who apparently describes himself as the %26#39;grumpy%26#39; one. i think %26#39;pathetic%26#39; would be a better description
well I am a member of the same site, and even though I do not get along very well with the grumpy one..but I cannot challenge his moderation decisions...they always seem to be fare and result of a good judgment..
India Mike is far more real than trip advisor. TA is full of agents and tour operators trying to tout their services. Some of TA%26#39;s so called %26#39;experts%26#39; are patronising to the core, often they do not even provide accurate information. There are instances where these %26#39;experts%26#39; take umbrage when other operators try to poach their turf.
India mike offers much better real information about places, travel, hotels, ground realities, pricing and so much more. Not just for backpackers and budget travellers. Their moderators are quick to weed out agents and operators out for free publicity, unlike at certain sites where agents in the guise of %26#39;experts%26#39; dominate.
Sour grapes Lemmers?
I thought Trip Advisor is a travel site, not one to air personal grievances against someone from another site.
';I thought Trip Advisor is a travel site, not one to air personal grievances against someone from another site.';
I agree.
I have been using IM for some time now, and have crossed paths (or posts) with the ';grumpy'; one, he%26#39;s not grumpy 24/7! Even I get frustrated when people open a thread about the same topic over and over again, imagine how many times they must%26#39;ve seen it happen! They%26#39;re just trying to prevent chaos in the forum. The mods have (not just that one mod you%26#39;re referring to) merged a couple of posts of mine (not threads though) and were very nice when doing so, and absolutely fair.
Moreover, personal attacks are completely inappropriate on any forum, not just India Mike. So when you do personally attack someone, you will get banned from any forum.
It%26#39;s a great place to get advice, don%26#39;t badmouth it just because you had a bad experience.
This is an interesting string. Lemmers seems to be hurt and for someone who is posting for the love of helping others, it is a rude jolt to be pulled up, for whatever reason, right or wrong. I think a forum is a democratic blackboard and everyone, even the fakes, have a right to post. The readers are intelligent enough to sort the bad eggs out themselves.
I have been on India Mike for a long time and if you will pull up my old posts on TA, I used to actually send people to India Mike. But ever since it got sold out by its creator and the rebels launched the new site, something has changed. Look at the Jaipur Forum, there are total of 3 posts in the month of July, 1 unanswered. We used to have Lily, who was a great help and used to give insightful replies, who hasnt posted since Feb 2007. She owns Jas Vilas one of the best homestays in Jaipur and I can only imagine she got a ticking off and just stopped posting.
This brings me to Mihar%26#39;s post. TA is itself owned by Expedia. So is India Mike better because it is run by amateurs and not a corporate? Well Expedia does not interfere with the forum nor does it promote its own services here nor do most people even know its owned by Expedia. Should professionals post on TA? I would say absolutely, if they stick to giving good advice and scrupulously avoid this forum as a way to do business. Go through Lily%26#39;s advice on India Mike. SHe never promoted her guest house. It was others who used to point on the forum after they visited Jaipur and stayed with her that she was the owner of Jas Vilas. Whose loss is it that Lily no longer posts on India Mike? I say it is India Mike that lost a great resource. And if people like Lemmers stop posting, that will again be a loss for India Mike. Time for a wake up call, Id say.
just to get it straight folks the reason i reposted my query on another site on indiamike was because the %26#39;new thread%26#39; i posted apparently got lost and did not appear in the forum i was trying to enter probably due to my being unfamiliar with computers in general and with indiamikes format in particular. i had no intention of hogging space.the reason i was banned was not essentially because of this. the reason i was banned was because having received indiamikes rather abrupt warning out of the ether so to speak i then had the temerity and cheek to enquire if indiamike was a man or a machine. his reply to this was both spiteful and aggresive in tone. i rather got the impression of a person with no sense of humour and an exaggerated sense of his own importance. what they used to call in the old days %26#39;a little hitler%26#39;
as a slightly anarchistic democrat i decided to reply in the only way possible ie through another web site. my discussion is i think valid in a travel context as indiamike is a travel forum. and i have found in my 60 years of travelling through this world that if you dont challenge authoritarian tendencys in whatever form they appear they will gradually close down your freedoms. take a look at the world around you folks!
p.s. the whole process took about two minutes so i dont think i could have been abusing the indiamike site that much!
