How to go from Mumbai to Taj Mahal

Hi All,

A group of us will be in Mumbai for work.

On the weekend we would like to go from Mumbai to the Taj Mahal (via flight) as we only have a weekend to do it in. What is the fastest way to get from Mumbai to Taj Mahal (the best means of transport)?

How to go from Mumbai to Taj Mahal

Easy as pie:

- Friday evening fly to Delhi, stay overnight

- Saturday make a day trip to Agra by road or train, overnight Delhi

- Sunday Delhi sightseeing and evening flight to Mumbai

Or like this:

- Friday evening fly to Delhi, stay overnight

- Saturday half day Delhi sightseeing, drive to Agra at 2 pm, overnight Agra

- Sunday Taj by dawn, Agra Fort, drive to Delhi airport for flight to Mumbai

Many thanks for the above!

I am wondering if we fly on Friday Evening from Mumbai to Dehli.

Fly to Agar on Saturday – Go to Agra and fly back on Saturday Evening – Is that possible?

What are your thoughts?

That%26#39;s exactly the way I did it. Works perfectly. The train you should take from Delhi to Agra and back is the Bhopal Shatabdi Express (the chair car is pretty comfy). Leaves New Delhi at 6.15 a.m. and gets to Agra at about 8.30 or so. You have all day and then you get the same train on its return journey. Leaves Agra at about 7 or so in the evening. Train numbers 2001 and 2002. For e-tickets, go to www.irctc.co.in.

Incidentally, apart from the obvious Taj Mahal, the other monument worth a visit is the Agra Fort. I found that fascinating as well.

Sorry, I seem to have incorrectly answered the last part of your question. I was suggesting getting back to Delhi Saturday evening and flying back to Mumbai Sunday morning. You could, of course, get one of those late night flights back to Mumbai Saturday night itself, but you may not make it to the airport in time.

If you take the 6:15 a.m. Shatabdi to Agra, you will be there at 8:15 and you will be able to see the Taj by say 11:30 a.m. Then lunch at Agra and you can leave by 12:30 p.m. You will be able to reach Delhi airport for certain by 7:00 p.m. (accounting for evening traffic). So the earliest flight you can take should be something that departs Delhi at 8:00 p.m.

I don%26#39;t particularly like this idea...it doesn%26#39;t give you any leeway or margin, and you will reach your hotel in Mumbai by 11 p.m. making it a marathon 17 hour day - all of it travelling, except for only 2 hours of sightseeing. What%26#39;s the point of subjecting yourself to that?

Might as well see Agra Fort (a UNESCO World Heritage Monument) and then drive back to Delhi in a more relaxed manner.

Delhi itself is a capital rich in history, with so many landmarks and monuments to see. If you have been to Athens, Delhi is like the Athens of India, it is filled with historical and architectural treasures. You might as well see those and then fly to Mumbai on Sunday.

Flying to Agra doesn%26#39;t make much sense since for a group of travellers sharing a vehicle or going by train, it will cost you significantly more and save no time at all.

Which airlines fly to Dehli from Mumbai?

This is India%26#39;s most popular flight sector so most airlines fly it. There is a flight almost every 30 minutes.

Use a travel portal to check rates for different airlines. I use makemytrip.com. There are some budget airlines and some full service ones. The full service airlines (Jet Airways and Kingfisher Class) are more reliable in the sense that they will definitely take off :) Flights marked ';Refundable'; are the ones that I worry about being cancelled.
