I hear there is a festival in Bangalore in April, could anyone tell me when it is
festival bangalore
I waited to see whether someone from bangalore could help you.
If you mean religious festivals, there is easter and then the office list lists sankranti on april 14 for bangalore
festival bangalore
It is listed as M V Sankranti - I am sure that is different from Makar Sankranti which was earlier this year
What kind of festival are you talking about-some details will help.
my husband read somwhere that it takes place we think round the full moon, can not remember the name. there is a procession in the street at night time
i will confess that my curiosity got the better of me since it was a bit of bangalore trivia that i had not heard of and i googled a bit. you maybe referring to the karaga festival which takes place on chaitra poornima day. The dates will vary from year to year because these days are based on the hindi calendar. Chaitra Poornima for 2009 is listed as April 09.
Pls note : i have arrived at this conclusion through googling and a method of association. this is not a definitive assertion about any festival.
The following Hindu, Jain and Sikh festivals are in April:
Ramanavami: Friday, 03-04-2009 - this is marked by nine days of celebrations with traditional music kutcheris as well as dance-dramas. The deity is taken on processions in the streets also.
Mahavir Jayanti: Tuesday, 07-04-2009 - not sure if this is celebrated in Bangalore; it is a Jain festival
Hanuman Jayanti: Thursday, 09-04-2009 - likely to be interesting crowds at Hanuman Temples.
Baisakhi / Vishu: Tuesday, 13-04-2009 - Baisakhi is a the harvest festival of Punjab celebrated by both Hindus and Sikhs; might not be celebrated large scale in Bangalore. But on this day people visit Gurudwaras, and have Baisakhi processions and traditional performances. Vishu is celebrated in homes; you are unlikely to see anything outside.
Bengali New Year / Bohag Bihu: Wednesday, 15-04-2009 - only a small community in Bangalore, may not be visible celebrations.
Akshaya Tritiya: Monday, 27-04-2009 - people buy gold on Akshaya Tritiya, a very auspicious day when the sun and the moon are considered to be both at their brightest. They also offer prayers at temples.
It is the Karaga festival you are talking about. This year expect it to happen late in April - around the 25th or so (I%26#39;m not sure of the dates). That is the one where a procesion takes place all night and goes through several parts of Bangalore (mostly central Bangalore). www.karaga.org has some information but is mostly outdated.
sriniketana thanks for such a helpful link. It was interesting to see information on the Karaga festival.
